Periowave

Periowave – Photodynamic Disinfection

  • Periowave is an effective, minimally invasive, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory treatment; characteristics that make it ideal for the treatment of gum disease.
  • Periowave produces a powerful photodynamic disinfection that kills the bacteria and inactivates toxins left behind after scaling and root planing / debridement.

Periowave offers another alternative to the use of local or systemic antibiotics in perio patients. Pockets are simply irrigated with Periowave solution and activated with a very low-energy ( Class 3b source but only Class 2 at the handpiece) laser for just 60 seconds per site. The special dye in Periowave solution is selective for bacterial cell walls; the laser energises the dye leading to cell wall lysis and bacterial death.

The Periowave System comprises the Periowave laser base station with handpiece, fibre optic cable, footswitch and power supply. Disposables for Periowave consist of the Periowave Solution, in 0.6ml and 2ml disposable syringes (with sub-gingival irrigator), and light-diffusing tips. Full instructions are provided and training when installing in practice.

Note: although protective eyewear is advised for patients and operator, the laser energy is no greater than lecture-room pointing devices. Periowave’s laser does not cause co-lateral damage to soft or hard tissues.
